Rupes
In the early 1800s, at the foot of the Rupe di Roccella, young Vincenzo Errigo distilled herbal infusions using his mother’s secret recipe. One night, he met Pietro, a lawyer and patriot, who with friends secretly toasted to freedom with Vincenzo’s liquor—calling it “Rupes.” After their execution, a frightened Vincenzo stopped production and vowed secrecy. Before his death, he passed the recipe to his son, insisting the story remain hidden for a century. Four generations later, the Errigo family shares both the recipe and the tale, honoring their legacy with the cry: “Hail Freedom, Hail Fatherland.”
